BRANDS & MANUFACTURERS

How do we begin working together?

Start by sharing your project needs with us. Whether you have a specific vision or need creative direction, we'll guide you through selecting the perfect artist for your products.

What types of products do you license art for?

Our artists create for a wide range of categories including books, home décor, textiles, gift items, stationery, tableware, brand work and more. If you can put art on it, we'd love to discuss it!

How do I request access to view full artist portfolios?

To view our complete collection of artwork—organized by artist, category, or specific themes—you’ll need a Canto account. Canto is our private digital library where we host full portfolios and available artwork for licensing.

To request access, click this link and choose the "Access Request" button. We’ll get back to you with your account details and personalized recommendations, if helpful.

How long does the licensing process typically take?

From initial concept to final artwork, timing varies by project. Generally, expect 2-4 weeks for initial concepts and 4-8 weeks for final artwork development once the project starts. We'll create a timeline together that works for your production schedule.

Do you work with smaller companies or just large manufacturers?

We work with companies of all sizes. What matters most is a shared commitment to quality and clear communication.

Can artwork be modified for our specific needs?

Absolutely! Our artists can adjust colors, scale, and elements to suit your product specifications and market requirements.

What if we need exclusivity for certain markets?

We can structure agreements to provide category or territory exclusivity. Let's discuss your specific needs.

Do you handle all the contract details?

Yes! We manage all licensing agreements, ensuring clear terms that protect both parties while keeping the process smooth and professional.

What are typical licensing terms?

While each agreement is customized, standard terms usually include 2-3 year licenses with royalties based on wholesale prices. We're happy to discuss specific terms for your project.

How are files delivered?

We provide industry-standard digital files in your required format, whether that's AI, PSD, PNG, or others, along with any needed color separations.

What do you look for in artists?

We look for distinctive style, professional approach, and ability to create commercially viable work. Most importantly, we look for artists who are excited to grow and collaborate.

Do I need previous licensing experience?

While experience is helpful, it's not required. We're happy to guide artists who show strong potential and understanding of commercial markets.

Can I still sell my own work if you represent me?

Yes! We'll clearly define which markets and categories we're representing you in, leaving you free to pursue other opportunities.

How involved are you in the creative process?

We provide market insights and direction while respecting your creative vision. Think of it as a collaborative partnership focused on creating commercially successful art.

How often will I need to create new work?

This varies based on market demand and opportunities, but expect to develop new collections throughout the year. We'll work together to establish a comfortable pace.

How long does it take to hear back about submissions?

Due to high submission volumes, response time is typically 4-8 weeks for portfolios that align with our current needs.

How are royalties handled?

We manage all licensing agreements, royalty collections, and payments. Royalties are typically paid quarterly, with clear reporting on all licensed uses.

Do you charge artists any fees?

We do not charge to be represented by Tantau Studio. We earn our commission only when we successfully license your work.

What about international licensing?

We work with manufacturers worldwide and handle all international licensing agreements and payments, making it seamless for our artists.

Where are you located?

While we're based on Vashon Island in Washington State, we work with artists and clients globally through a combination of digital communication and in-person meetings when possible.

How do you protect intellectual property?

We take IP protection seriously, using robust contracts and monitoring to ensure artwork is used only as licensed. Our experienced team handles all legal and contractual matters.

Can we see examples of past successful projects?

Yes! Check out our Artist’s portfolio section for a selection of successful licensed products and collaborations.

Do you offer rush services?

While we prioritize quality over speed, we understand time-sensitive projects. Let's discuss your timeline and we'll do our best to accommodate it.

What's your coffee order?

Strong and creative - just like our artists! (But seriously, we run on enthusiasm, experience, and yes, quite a bit of coffee.)

What's the most unusual product you've ever licensed art for?

We've handled some wonderfully unique projects! From designer dog beds to luxury surfboards, we love when clients think outside the box.

What's your favorite part of this work?

That moment when an artist sees their work on a product for the first time - pure magic! (Close second: when a client tells us their licensed product is flying off the shelves.)
